He was a 21-year-old college student when, in the early morning of October 8, 1998, two men tied him to a split-rail fence in a remote area east of Laramie, Wyoming, where he was beaten and left to die. Nearly 18 hours later he was found by a cyclist who initially mistook him for a scarecrow. He died October 12, 1998. Mrs. Shepard spoke for educating for tolerance and advocating for civil rights for all. She responded to questions from members of the audience.
This event, titled “The Legacy of Matthew Shepard,” was held in the Rinker Field House inside the Hollis Center. It was sponsored by Equality Florida and Stetson University organizations including the Organization for Students Actively Pursuing Equality (OSAPE), Kaleidoscope (Gay/Straight Alliance), the Artists and Lecturers Series, and the Multicultural Student Council.
