Representative Alan Grayson (D-FL) spoke about what he called the “Great American Bathroom Controversy.” He started with a photo of Christine Jorgensen, thought to be the first person to undergo sex reassignment surgery. He said that despite her notoriety in the 1950s, there was no controversy over which bathroom Christine Jorgensen used. He showed a photo of two women standing at urinals and said it was what “Republicans and bigots” wanted to happen. He also showed a drawing of a girl and a boy looking into their diapers with the caption, “Oh! That explains the difference in our wages.” He said wage differences between men and women are a bigger gender issue than which bathrooms people use. close
