Pragmatism was the effort of Charles Sanders Peirce and William James which Dewey embraces, although he doesn't use the term pragmatism himself very much. And this is the idea that thought is for action, the purpose of ideas is to serve as the blueprint for action, not for the purpose of passive contemplation.
