James Green outlined the future of the NASA’s space exploration. NASA planned to send humans to Mars by 2030 and was mapping the planet using a robotic rover on Mars named Curiosity.

Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Heather Higginbottom, and USAID Administrator Gayle Smith briefed reporters and responded to questions on State Department and Agency for International Development (USAID) fiscal year 2017 budget requests. Then John Kirby held the regular daily briefing, responding to questions on a variety of topics.

The Potomac Institute held a forum on countering terrorist organizations and biological threats. The panel comprised former Homeland Security Security Tom Ridge, former U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lieutenant General Vincent Stewart, and military and diplomatic officials from Jordan and Sri Lanka.

More than 100 precinct captains and chairs gathered for caucus training and to hear from elected officials. The shadow delegation for the District of Columbia talked about the resolution for statehood for the district that the Polk County Democrats were supporting. The event was held by the Polk County Democrats at Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 33 union hall.

Thomas Donohue spoke to reporters and answered questions about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s annual “State of American Business” address. He said the chamber will focus its priorities on trade, improving the U.S. regulatory system, and supporting politicians who share the chamber’s vision for economic growth.

Physicians, nurses, and other health care industry officials testified on ways to increase Americans' access to primary care doctors. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimated that the U.S. would have a shortage of approximately 21,000 primary care physicians in 2015, with the shortfall projected to further increase as the number of primary care medical students continued to decline and 30 million Americans became eligible for heath care under the Affordable Care Act. Among the issues discussed were Medicare reimbursement rates, changing the culture of medical schools to encourage students into primary health care, and forgiveness of some of the medical school loan debt accrued by primary care practitioners.
