A confirmation hearing was held for the nomination of Lieutenant General Thomas Waldhauser to lead U.S. Africa Command and Lieutenant General Joseph Lengyel to be the chief of the National Guard Burea. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced Lieutenant General Lengyel. During his testimony Lieutenant General Waldhauser said that he was not aware of an “overall grand strategy” in Libya and that additional ground troops were not needed at the moment.

CIA Director John Brennan testified at a hearing on his agency’s operations and resources. He called ISIS* in Libya the most dangerous branch of the terror organization. He also outlined some key threats the next president will need to address, including cybersecurity, ISIS, and nuclear proliferation.

Senate Republican leaders spoke with reporters following their weekly party luncheon. They talked about the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, as well as their party’s legislative agenda.

Trade union leaders, immigration policy experts and economists testified at a hearing on the impact of the H-2B Temporary Foreign Worker Program on the labor market. The H-2B visa program permits U.S. employers to temporarily hire foreign workers to perform non-agricultural labor and services. The program is capped at 66,000 workers but Congress passed a provision in 2015 that would potentially increase the number of visas issued.

Witnesses testified at a joint hearing of two Senate Judiciary subcommittees. The hearing concerned the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery Act, which deals with adjusting the statutes of limitation which had prevented the restitution of some art works confiscated by the Nazis during World War II. Actress Helen Mirren testified about what she had learned while portraying in the movie Woman in Gold a Jewish refugee who fought the Austrian government for a piece of art taken from her family during the Holocaust. Simon Goodman testified about his work to find his family’s stolen treasures.
