House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) briefed reporters and responded to questions on a variety of topics. Most of the briefing focused on the House Democratic sit-in to force a vote on gun legislation, which he called a publicity stunt. He also spoke about the Supreme Court’s decision on Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) and President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. The court in a 4-4 vote upheld a lower court’s injunction against the Obama administration’s deferred-action immigration policy.

Congressional Democrats concluded their 26-hour sit-in on the House floor over gun violence for a rally with supporters on the East steps of the U.S. Capitol. With the House in recess until July 5, members return home to their districts.

President Obama spoke to reporters about and answered their questions on the Supreme Court’s 4-4 ruling in U.S. v. Texas, which upheld a lower court’s injunction against the Obama administration’s deferred-action immigration policy. The president said the decision had less of an impact than it would have if the court had a ninth member confirmed by the Senate. He also said the Republican Party’s strategy on immigration would be “broken” by the upcoming election.

The Senate reconvened after a short recess to resume debate on the Commerce, Science, Justice spending bill for fiscal year 2017. Members voted to block a bipartisan gun control proposal that would prevent individuals on the “No-Fly” or “Selectee” lists from purchasing guns, and also alert the FBI when individuals previously on the lists try to buy guns.
