On This Day: Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Gutzon Borglum began construction on a monument near Keystone, South Dakota on October 4, 1927 and the project was completed in October 1941. Mount Rushmore is an iconic American site with sculpted faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The mountain was originally named the "Six Grandfathers" by the local Lakota Sioux tribe, and was renamed after Charles E Rushmore, a New York lawyer during the 1885 expedition.
