Lesson Plan: Competition, Ticketing, and Antitrust Issues in Live Entertainment

Live Entertainment Ticket Sales

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) comments on the circumstances surrounding the purchasing of tickets for live entertainment and the issues surrounding the merger between Ticketmaster and Live Nation.

Description

This lesson provides students with a variety of viewpoints related to concerns in the live entertainment industry. Students will view video clips from a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which leaders from Live Nation, SeatGeek, and Jam Productions, along with other industry stakeholders and policy advocates, testified to offer their perspectives on competition, ticketing and antitrust issues. Students will consider their personal experiences with live entertainment such as sporting and concert events, and listen to experts discuss issues found within the industry including monopolistic behavior and the lack of competition, hidden fees that are passed on to artists and consumers, ticket resales, and antitrust legislation. After hearing multiple perspectives on this topic and engaging in class discussion, students will respond to a summative prompt that asks them to consider which area they think should be addressed in the future, and what solutions would they propose.
