Description

In 1950, twenty-two countries under the United Nations flag, aided the Republic of Korea against the invasion of North Korea and later the Chinese. Often called the “Forgotten War”, many do not understand the sacrifice of so many made to protect the fledgling Korean democracy.

  • According to the first video, what made the UN’s aid to the Republic of Korea historically significant?
  • What do you believe to be significant about the number of countries who aided the Republic of Korea?
  • Which countries did you know participated in the Korean War, and which surprised you?
  • According to the Ambassador from the Republic of Korea, why was the sacrifice of those who served important for the Republic of Korea?
  • EXTENSION ACTIVITY: Using the UN Participation Map (see linked Resources) from the Korean War Legacy Foundation students can map the different countries that aided the Republic of Korea. Have students pick a country that aided the Republic of Korea and research their role in the Korean War.
