The House worked on President Biden's social spending plan, also known as the Build Back Better Act. Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) spoke in opposition to the bill for eight hours and 32 minutes, thus preventing a final passage vote on the measure. Leader McCarthy speech broke a record set by Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who while she was the minority leader in 2018 spoke about immigration for eight hours and seven minutes. Members earlier in the day passed two suspension bills.
