The House Is Not In Session
House Session - October 20, 2023

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for the third time failed to get a majority of the floor votes needed to be elected speaker, garnering just 194 votes. Following the vote, the House recessed subject to the call of the chair. Because there was not a speaker, the House could not conduct any legislative business. The House had been without a speaker since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted on October 3 when he failed to get enough votes to retain his leadership position. In that vote, eight Republicans and all Democrats voted in favor of the motion to vacate the chair, the first time in House history members had voted to remove the speaker.
