Margaret Tutwiler, State Department Spokesperson, announced that the American embassy in Kuwait would be vacated after all Americans who want to leave Iraq have been allowed to leave by Iraqi authorities. In Baghdad on December 7, the Iraqi foreign minister Tariq Aziz stated that foreign nationals held in Iraq against their will would be granted exit visas “in a few days.” American officials suggested that the closure of the embassy was taking advantage of the release of hostages to remove American diplomats from harm’s way should a war erupt in Iraq in the future. Reporters at the briefing were skeptical of the administration’s position that the embassy in Kuwait should remain open without the presence of a staff. close
