Commerce Secretary Don Evans talked about the release of the retail sales for January 2001 and how the report indicated a slow down in retail sales. He stressed that the tax cut proposed by the Bush Administration would give more money to the consumer and allow them to pay down their personal debt. This reduction in personal debt would allow Americans to increase their spending. Following his remarks he answered questions from reporters. close
