The book examines the history of the Soviet Union starting from the 1917 revolution to the Great Terror and World War II, followed by global expansion and the Cold War, and wrapping up with the regime’s decline and collapse. He was questioned by the audience on subjects such as the appeal of communism, the connection between communism and anti-Americanism; and the comparisons between socialism, communism, and Christianity. Professor Pipes served as National Security Council adviser on Soviet and East European affairs from 1981-82.
