Russian and Eastern European scholar, historian and author Richard Pipes was interviewed by author, columnist and former “Firing Line” host William F. Buckley, Jr. on Pipes' latest book, Communism: A History, published by Random House. The book examines the history of the Soviet Union starting with its evolution from the 1917 revolution to the Great Terror and World War II, followed by global expansion and the Cold War, and wrapping up with the regime’s decline and collapse. He was questioned by the audience on subjects such as the appeal of communism, the connection between communism and anti-Americanism, and the comparisons between socialism, communism and Christianity. Professor Pipes served as National Security Council adviser on Soviet and East European affairs from 1981-82. close
