Mr. Gavin Menzies, a former submarine commander in the British Royal Navy, discussed his controversial book 1421: The Year China Discovered America, published by William Morrow. The book argues that during the Ming dynasty Chinese ships reached the shores of the Americas 70 years before Christopher Columbus. According to Mr. Menzies, the reason there is little evidence of the expeditions is that the ships were destroyed upon their return after the Emperor pursued a policy of isolationism. After his remarks, illustrated by slides, he answered audience members' questions. close
