The Middle of Everywhere is psychologist and author Mary Pipher’s chronicle of the changes in the town of Lincoln, Nebraska, after it became an official refugee resettlement center. The book documents the cultural clash between residents and refugees from 52 countries, including Sudan, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Vietnam. Ms. Piper spoke with the newcomers about their family problems, their views on America, work and education. In addition to learning about the various cultures of the refugees, Ms. Pipher discloses that she was also taught to view American culture and the “American Dream” from the perspective of the immigrants. close
