Sen. Simpson spoke before the National League of Cities as part of a series of speeches by members of Congress during the organization’s conference in Washington, DC. In his remarks, Sen. Simpson discussed his past position as a city attorney while touching on the controversy over his recent characterization of CNN reporter in Baghdad, Peter Arnett, as an Iraqi sympathizer. In the body of his remarks, Sen. Simpson predicted an increasing partisanship in budget issues, due to the partisanship created by the Congressional vote allowing the use of force in the Persian Gulf. Analyzing the Bush Administration’s budget proposals, he came out against excessive government spending, and discussed the programs that would most affect local governments in the future. close
