Novelist Frank Schaeffer was joined by his son Corporal John Schaeffer and talked about the book they co-wrote, Keeping Faith: A Father-Son Story about Love and the United States Marine Corps, published by Carroll and Graf. In 1999, John enlisted in the Marine Corps after high-school graduation. His father Frank expressed concern and embarrassment, largely because the affluent Schaeffers sent their children to the best universities, not the military. Written in the alternating voices of Frank and John, the book chronicles the family’s experiences during John’s boot camp training. Both father and son related their newfound conclusions on issues of class, duty, and patriotism. After their presentation they answered questions from members of the audience. close
