Joan Steinau Lester talked about her authorized biography of Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Fire in My Soul, published by Atria Books. Ms. Norton, a fourth generation Washingtonian, was a civil rights activist, feminist leader, and taught full-time as a law professor early in her career. She was named by President Jimmy Carter to head the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, becoming the first woman to do so. At the time of this event, she was in her seventh term as the Congressional Delegate for the District of Columbia. After the presentation, both women answered questions from members of the audience. The event was held at the Howard University Bookstore. close
