Several governors and business leaders spoke to reporters outside the White House after meeting with President Bush and Education Secretary Lamar Alexander on the Bush administration’s new education proposals. Major points in the proposals included parental choice in school selection, national testing for evaluating schools' performances, and Federal funding for underprivileged children in private and parochial schools. Governor Romer supported differentiation in teacher pay on the basis of teachers' abilities and situations in order to provide accountability for poor teaching, but stressed that it would not be used as punishment. Mr. O’Neill said the president asked business leaders to create a non-profit research corporation to create new prototype schools. close
