President Bush approached a microphone to talk about the terrorist attack on the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad. He condemned the terrorism and spoke of offering U.S. condolences by telephone to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He said he had directed Ambassador Bremer in Iraq to provide assistance in rescue and recovery. Earlier today a truck bomb exploded at the Baghdad headquarters killing at least 17 people and wounding more than 100. Among those killed was U.N. special envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello, the top U.N. official in Iraq.
