The first national convention sponsored by the 21st Century Commission on African-American Males talked about U.S. policies and institutions concerning black males and sought solutions to the culture of violence that affects many young black men in America. The forum entitled, “Understanding Substance Abuse Among Black Males,” focused on problems of drug use among young black males, which contributes to the high dropout rates of black males and the culture of violence inhabiting many American cities. Mr. Johnson stated the problem of substance abuse is not a black problem but rather a U.S. society problem, which appears to be a black problem because of the heavy media coverage of drug abuse in the inner cities. close
