Jan Egeland, U.N Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, spoke to reporters about humanitarian disaster assistance to Asian countries devastated by a tsunami that affected the entire Indian Ocean. He also talked about the types and levels of U.S. assistance and answered questions from the reporters. In response to one question he criticized the size and levels of U.S. contribution to disaster assistance, characterizing U.S. assistance as “stingy” when compared to overall standards of living in the West. close
