Sen. Hatch discussed the announcement of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall’s retirement with reporters in the U.S. Capitol. He praised Justice Marshall as being one of the top jurists of the twentieth century, and said he disapproved of naming a justice to the Supreme Court on the basis of race. He named a number of possible nominees who he considered would make good justices, including Clarence Thomas, Ken Starr, Edith Starr, Larry Silverman, and Fernando Fernandez. Sen. Hatch said people should not gripe at a nominee named by a president who was elected by a clear majority like President Bush. close
