America and the Courts included:

On Friday, July 1, 2005 former White House Associate Counsel Reginald Brown was interviewed about the next steps in replacing Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. He discussed his work in the Bush administration preparing background briefings on potential Supreme Court nominees. He talked about the process of nominations and the workings of the White House counsel’s office.

Television advertisements about the judicial nomination process were shown. One ad was sponsored by Progress for America, the other by MoveOn PAC.

On Tuesday, June 28, 2005 Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens spoke at the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference on Mackinac Island, Michigan about the cases from the Sixth Circuit decided in the recent Supreme Court term.

On Wednesday, July 6, 2005 participants spoke to reporters after a hearing in U.S. District Court. New York Times correspondent Judith Miller was sentenced to jail for contempt of court after refusing to reveal her source to a grand jury investigating the leak of the identity of undercover CIA officer Valerie Plame. Matthew Cooper avoided jail by agreeing to testify after his source released him from his confidentiality agreement. Judith Miller was taken into custody in the courtroom facing up to four months in jail. Time magazine correspondent Matthew Cooper, New York Times executive editor Bill Keller, and the attorney for New York Times correspondent Judith Miller spoke with reporters. close
