Members of the House of Representatives debated the extension of most favored nation trade status for China. The extension of most favored nation trade status, favored by the Bush administration, would restart normalized trade relations with China that had been stopped shortly after the massacre of dissenting students in Tienanmen Square in Beijing in 1989. Opponents of the extension, citing continuing human rights violations in China, believed MFN status for China would appear to condone the actions of the Chinese government, and believed at the least that the extension should be linked with changes toward democracy in the totalitarian country. China threatened to respond in kind to American exports if the U.S. ended normalized trade relations. close
