Senator Smith talked about his book Remembering Garrett: One Family’s Battle with a Child’s Depression, published by Carroll and Graf. Senator Smith talked about his son Garrett who suffered from depression and eventually took his own life at the age of 21. Senator Smith discussed the need to take the stigma out of depression and talked about legislation he sponsored that funds suicide prevention efforts. The Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act was signed into law by President Bush on October 21, 2004. After his remarks, Senator Smith answered questions from members of the audience with his wife, Sharon.
