William Polk discussed the book he co-authored with former Senator George McGovern, Out of Iraq: Why, How, When. Mr. Polk also discussed his book The Birth of America: From Before Columbus to the Revolution, published by HarperCollins. He described significant events during this period and the British influence on European, Spanish, and Dutch colonies. Mr. Polk compared America’s early wars to the present war in Iraq and addressed how the U.S. could get out of Iraq using examples of the Colonial Revolution and Vietnam. He also responded to questions from members of the audience.

Former Senator McGovern, the Democratic Party presidential candidate in 1972, was not able to attend as planned.

Mr. Polk was a member of the Policy Planning Council under President Kennedy, professor of history at the University of Chicago, and president of the Adlai E. Stevenson Institute of International Affairs. His books include Understanding Iraq: The Whole Sweep of Iraqi History, from Genghis Khan’s Mongols to the Ottoman Turks to the British Mandate to the American Occupation, published by Harper Perennial. close
