The Commission on U.S./Japan Relations for the 21st Century held a conference entitled, “Preparing For a Pacific Century,” focusing on the future of U.S.-Japanese relations. In the forum entitled, “Scope of the Challenge: Five Perspectives From the Pacific Rim,” five scholars on East Asian affairs discussed their views on issues involved in the involvement of countries in East Asia in the global economic and political spheres. Issues discussed by the participants in the forum included trade issues, the balance of economic power in the future global marketplace, and the security interests of the Pacific rim. close
