Leon Hadar talked about his book Sandstorm: Policy Failure in the Middle East, published by Palgrave Macmillan. In his book he surveyed the historical evolution of what he called the U.S. “Middle East Paradigm” and concludes that its costs have outweighed its benefits. Mr. Hadar argued instead for a policy of “constructive disengagement” from the Middle East, while encouraging the formation of regional security institutions. He said that Europe, Japan, and South Korea should assume the costs and responsibility of policing the region, since they are far more dependent on Middle East oil than the United States. Mr. Hadar was joined in discussion by Jim Pinkerton and Geoffrey Kemp. During the question and answere portion of the event, the panelists talked about the current conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. close
