The 41 year old candidate recently was defeated in his bid to become governor of Louisiana in a runoff election that gained national headlines due to Mr. Duke’s previous association with the Ku Klux Klan. He is the first candidate to announce that he will oppose President Bush in Republican primaries for the party’s presidential nomination in 1992. This will be Mr. Duke’s second presidential campaign. He ran in several Democratic primaries in 1988. In speaking about trade, he said it is time to say to the Japanese, “You no buy our rice, we no buy your cars.” His remarks were interrupted by a heckler.
