Peter Nelson talked about his book A More Unbending Battle: The Harlem Hellfighters' Struggle for Freedom in WWI and Equality at Home, published by Basic Civitas Books. The 369th Infantry Regiment was the first African-American regiment that fought in World War I. The soldiers, recruited from Harlem and known as the “Harlem Hellfighters,” fought alongside the French due to America’s segregation policy. Mr. Nelson said that the 369th Infantry Regiment spent more days in the trenches than any other American soldiers. He showed video in the background as he talked about the war and read passages from his book. Following his remarks, he answered questions from members of the audience. close
