House of Commons members debated the use of hand-held electronic devices in the chamber before voting 206-63 in favor of removing the block placed on their use in January 2011. Opponents argued that sending tweets or emails during debates is distracting and might be viewed negatively by the public. Supporters disagreed, saying that tweets and emails help them stay connected and in-touch with their constituents and staff during long periods of debate. The vote also allows members to read speeches and questions from their hand-held devices, however, laptops are still banned in the Commons chamber. close
