The Bluff Furnace was Chattanooga’s first heavy industrial site. This blast furnace was built in the 1850s by ironmaster Robert Cravens, and produced raw iron from local iron ore. It was originally fueled with charcoal, but in May of 1860 it was the first in the South to be converted into a coke fueled furnace. Coke is a cleaner, more efficient modified form of coal.
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2013 LCV Cities Tour” in Chattanooga, Tennessee, from December 15-19 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.
