Dave Zirin talked about his book, Brazil’s Dance with the Devil: The World Cup, the Olympics, and the Fight for Democracy, in which he looks at the politics and economics behind Brazil’s hosting of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. He argued that countries use these international events to improve their image and court international investment, but that benefits to the citizens of the host countries are often not as great as promised. He also argued that there have been strikes and violent protests in Brazil in reaction to money being diverted from education, hospitals, and affordable housing, and instead to stadiums and infrastructure for the games. Mr. Zirin spoke at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C. close
