Stubby the War Dog Ann Bausum talked about her book, Sergeant Stubby: How a Stray Dog and His Best Friend Helped Win World War I and Stole the Heart of a Nation, about the life of “Sergeant Stubby,” who served in World War I and became a national celebrity. “Sergeant Stubby” was a stray dog adopted who became the first canine given a rank in the U.S. armed forces. After being adopted by an American soldier, Stubby served heroically with the 102nd Infantry, 26th Yankee Division, in France during World War I. Over the course of 17 battles, he comforted troops in the trenches and alerted soldiers to incoming German gas attacks. He was later received by three American presidents. close
