After enlisting in the Army in 1947, Mr. Ross soon became a sergeant in charge of a small unit in South Korea. In 1950, he was captured by the Chinese and became a POW. The Korean war took place from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. During that time, 5.8 million Americans served in the U.S. Armed Forces and 33,686 were killed in action.
