History of Juneteenth Doug Matthews talked about the history of Juneteenth and Ashton Villa, the historic home in Galveston, Texas, where Major General Gordon Granger delivered the news of the end of the Civil War and the end of slavery. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slaver in the U.S.
