History of Juneteenth Doug Matthews talked about the history of Juneteenth and Ashton Villa, the historic home in Galveston, Texas, where Major General Gordon Granger delivered the news of the end of the Civil War and the end of slavery. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slaver in the U.S.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2015 LCV Cities Tour” in Galveston, Texas, from January 16-20, to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2. close
