Environmental ministers from the U.S., Mexico and Canada gave brief statements and responded to reporters' questions following their meeting in Washington, DC. The subject of their meeting was the recently completed North American Free Trade Agreement, which would lower trade barriers between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Opponents of the trade pact claim it lacks sufficient environmental protection provisions to prevent U.S. companies from moving plants to Mexico in order to avoid environmental regulations in the U.S. At the beginning of the news conference, the three ministers signed a resolution concerning environmental education. Mr. Charest delivered his remarks in French and English. close
