The South Carolina Senate voted 36-3 to take up a bill to remove the Confederate flag from the Capitol grounds, and later passed the bill in a 93-18 margin. The legislation came about in reaction to the June 2015 mass shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest African Methodist Episcopal church in the Southern United States. close
