Treasury Secretary Bentsen announced the names and introduced the members of a task force created by the Department of the Treasury to investigate the actions of the government involving a religious cult in Texas. In February 1993, four members of the department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were killed in a raid of the armed religious cult’s compound for violation of firearms regulations. After a 51 day standoff in which the religious cult was surrounded by government agents, the cult compound went up in flames following the government’s use of tear gas to attempt to force their surrender. Secretary Bentsen promised the task force would conduct an objective inquiry into the matter. close
