Reporters covering the U.S. Supreme Court and White House were joined by media legal experts in a panel discussion on the potential implications on the First Amendment and media law of rhetoric by the two leading 2016 presidential candidates, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. The panelists talked about the two campaigns' relationships with reporters and talked about ways they might change the White House’s relationship with journalists if they served as president. A Fox News video clip was shown of Donald Trump talking about changing libel laws. Other areas discussed included access issues and policies of different administrations and campaigns and possible changes on the Supreme Court. Panelists also took questions from audience members, many of them journalists themselves.

“Can a President Really Rewrite the First Amendment? A Look at Campaign Threats and Their Potential Impact on the Media” was held at the National Press Club. close
