Bradley Birkenfeld talked about his book, Lucifer’s Banker: The Untold Story of How I Destroyed Swiss Bank Secrecy, about exposing efforts by Swiss bank UBS to shelter billions of dollars for American clients. Mr. Birkenfeld was a banker for UBS and informed the Justice Department and IRS about the bank’s practices in 2007. In 2009, UBS agreed to pay a $780 million fine and disclose the names of thousands of U.S. clients. The Justice Department prosecuted Mr. Birkenfeld on a conspiracy charge, which led to a 30 month prison sentence. The Treasury Department, which recovered over $15 billion in back taxes and fines from U.S. citizens, gave MR. Birkenfeld $104 million upon his release in 2012 as part of the IRS’s whistle-blower award program. This book-launch party was held at the National Press Club. close
