James Monroe's Highland Sara Bon-Harper talked about James Monroe’s Highland. America’s fifth president was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, but in 1793 purchased land near Charlottesville, where he built a home he called “Highland.” The home was destroyed after the president’s death, but archaeologists are trying to uncover its history and appearance.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2017 LCV Cities Tour” in Charlottesville, Virginia, from March 18-24 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2. close
