The U.N. General Assembly voted 191-2 in favor of a resolution condemning the U.S. economic sanctions against Cuba, with only the United States and Israel voting against it. Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., explained in a statement to the assembly following the vote that while the Trump administration would retain diplomatic ties with Cuba, it was taking a different direction than under President Obama, who opened up dialogue with Cuba and reestablished a U.S. embassy on the island after more than 50 years of absence. Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, the Cuban foreign affairs minister, spoke out against the U.S. embargo of the island, noting the U.S. and Israel stood alone in their votes. close
