The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee held a hearing to receive an update on the implementation of the safety technology known as positive train control (PTC). The hearing was requested by Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) in response to the deadly derailment of an Amtrak passenger train outside Dupont, Washington, four months prior. Susan Fleming, director of the

Government Accountability Office’s Physical Infrastructure department, told committee members that “over half of commuter railroads” were at risk of not meeting a statutory deadline to implement PTC. Three railroad industry representatives also testified at the hearing.

Committee Chair John Thune (R-SD) spoke to reporters after the hearing. close
