This film documents the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign, which was organized by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to shift the focus of the civil rights movement to economic issues. The documentary, shot in eight weeks in the spring of 1968, shows participants from small towns in Mississippi travel to Washington, D.C, where they and others from across the country constructed tents and wooden shanties on the National Mall. The film, composed of scenes accompanied by audio recordings of participants, was made by Edward Scherer but never distributed. close
