House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) held a news conference call with reporters where he talked about a safe way to reopen Congress and his concerns around Speaker Pelosi’s decision to create a select committee on the coronavirus pandemic. He said it was a “purely political” move and “just another impeachment committee,” and added he would make a final decision in the coming week whether he would participate in the committee. On reopening Congress, he expressed his concerns on proxy voting, holding remote committee hearings and discussing national security items over technology. Representative McCarthy told reporters on the line that Congress was essential and “there is a way to do this and the answer should not be just no.” He was also asked about Speaker Pelosi’s defense of former Vice President Joe Biden over Tara Reade accusations. “She’s being a hypocrite,” Representative McCarthy told reporters. close
