California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) gave an update on the state’s coronavirus response and guidance for reopening schools. Governor Newsom announced five metrics for schools to follow, one being that if a county is on the state’s COVID-19 watch list, it cannot open for in-person class until a series of benchmarks are met for 14 days. Other metrics include a mask mandate for all staff and students, third grade and up; regular testing for teachers; contact tracing; and a distance learning plan. The governor emphasized his preference for in-person classes but stressed the importance of safety for the students and school staff. close
