Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Admiral Brett Giroir, assistant secretary for Health and Human Services, testified before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee on the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Redfield stated that while a vaccine may be available by the end of 2020, a return to “regular life” may not be until the second or third quarter of 2021. Later in the day, President Trump contradicted Dr. Redfield’s statement during a news conference, saying Dr. Redfield “made a mistake when he said that,” and that a vaccine could be ready in October or “a little bit after October.” Also, the witnesses responded to a wide range of questions regarding vaccine development, proper public health safety precautions, testing availability, political pressure on their agencies, and the need for additional funding. close
